Silly Sounds or Something Serious? All About Dog Hiccups!

Hiccups are not unusual for humans — but what about dogs?

Yes, dogs can get hiccups too! Just like in humans, hiccups in dogs are caused by involuntary diaphragm contractions, which suddenly close the space between the vocal cords, producing the familiar “hic” sound.

📌 Puppies are more likely to get hiccups, especially after eating or drinking quickly, when they’re tired, excited, or feeling cold.
Hiccups in puppies are much more common than in adult dogs, and tend to decrease or disappear completely as they grow older.

📌 Various remedies are suggested to help stop hiccups in dogs, but like with humans, there’s no guaranteed cure.
Here are three helpful techniques you can try:

  1. Disrupting the rhythm of breathing: Lay your dog on its back and gently massage the belly.
  2. Drinking water: This helps to calm your dog.

  3. Slowing down eating: For effective ways to help your dog eat slower; I’m going to write my next blog about “Fast Eating in Dogs”.

📌 Important: If the hiccups last more than a few hours, change in sound (from “hic” to “wheeze” or other unusual noises), or if your dog struggles to breathe, seek veterinary care immediately.
