In this first part, we are going to break down the most numerous and essential drivers on this road: Red Blood Cells (RBCs)—the very cells responsible for delivering oxygen to every tissue and muscle to keep your pet playful, alert, and thriving.
1. RBC (Total Red Blood Cell Count)
- Function: Microscopic capsules that transport oxygen from the lungs to body tissues and carry carbon dioxide back.
- Low Values: A clear sign of anemia, internal/external blood loss, or red blood cell destruction caused by blood-borne parasites or systemic disease.

2. Hb or Hgb (Hemoglobin)

- Function: Evaluates the variation and uniformity in red blood cell size.
- Clinical Significance: When the bone marrow begins churning out new cells of varying sizes, RDW is often the very first parameter to spike—serving as an early warning signal before obvious changes show up in other markers.
